The arguments over California’s correctional policies are buried in an avalanche of statistics. This edition looks at what types of offenders are sent to prison and how overcrowding has kept some people out of state prison - only to see them clog county jails.


Show Three :: Sentencing
California’s sentencing laws are a hodge-podge of often conflicting statutes. This edition reports on how judges interpret the law, deciding who goes to prison and for how long. Looking to the future, our producers investigate efforts to create a commission that would have vast powers to determine offenders’ prison terms.


Show Four :: Parole
California’s State inmates return to prison after they are released about 70 percent of the time. This episode reports on efforts that begin the rehabilitation process while still in prison. Although the “recidivism” rate is high, there are some programs that are working, and our producers visited these to find out the secrets to their success.
